Justice Involved Women: Developing an Agency-Wide Approach 17C3203

August 22-24, 2017: The program is delivered in three sequential phases – on line learning, face-to-face training and follow up coaching. Through blended learning delivery this 36-hour program leads participant teams through strategic planning to develop an agency plan that provides coordination and direction to manage women offenders effectively. The plan will guide development of agency policies and procedures to ensure that responsive and effective services are provided to meet the supervision and programming needs of justice involved women. The curriculum is designed to assist agencies to implement planned change in support of their public safety missions.

Application Deadline: June 16, 2017

Location: Aurora, Colorado

Who Should Attend: Staff with policymaking and decision-making authority in areas such as oversight of women’s corrections institutions, community corrections programs, leadership roles in critical areas such as medical/mental health, classification, risk and need reducing programs and re-entry. The training teams will be comprised of 4 individuals representing jails, prisons, community corrections or combined teams that commit to working together to developing an agency-wide draft proposal for improved management of justice involved women.

  • Requirements: Teams are asked to make a one-year commitment to this process. EACH MEMBER OF A PROPOSED TEAM MUST APPLY INDIVIDUALLY. One individual cannot apply for the full team. Teams that do not have a full complement of registered participants will not be considered for acceptance.
  • Please forward to Maureen Buell, NIC by June 16, 2017 to be considered for acceptance:
    • A written endorsement training attendance by top leadership of the agency to in consideration of implementing gender responsive policy and practice.
    • A short description of what outcomes your agency would like to achieve with respect to the management of justice involved women. Descriptions can be a team effort or one from each individual team member.
  • Must be able to demonstrate completion of all pre and post training assignments, to include three (3) one hour online training courses as assigned, and follow-up virtual team coaching. Faculty coaches will work with assigned team to provide support and guidance, on a limited basis, as teams address challenges, barriers as well as opportunities in policy and practice design. The coaching sessions are to be completed on or about December, 30, 2017.
  • Must be able to fully attend 20 hours over 2.5 days of face-to-face training, August 22-24, 2017.


The curriculum is research based, gender-informed (women) and designed for making systemic changes to improve management of justice involved women. Identified outcomes for enhanced policy and practice may include working toward reductions in recidivism and intermediate outcomes as in harm reduction, improved program participation rates, the appropriate use of disciplinary sanctions, successful reintegration/reentry and improvements in community stabilization.
