We are thinking of creating a video command center that will be responsible for monitoring 1500 new video camera feeds.  Does anyone have unit that is solely responsible for monitoring the video camera feeds?   If so, would you be willing to share your policies and procedures governing such a Unit.

How have the cameras improved operations?  What difficulties have they created?

Hello Debbie,

We currently have a Command Center with 5 Detention Service Officers (non-certified) that monitor our cameras 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each post has a post order that details their specific area of responsibility. There is also a Command Center Lieutenant assigned at all times who takes charge and provides direction when an incident takes place.

The cameras have assisted us by allowing us to watch incidents within the facility as they are taking place as well as review footage to determine what may have led up to a specific incident (i.e. inmate fight, medical issue, use of force, etc.).

We have not had any difficulties that I am aware of. Access to review/copy video is limited. Entrance to the Command Center to review video must be approved by the Command Center Lieutenant.

Please email me if you would like to discuss this further. I am happy to assist.
